Three years after the tragic death of her husband, Hillary thought she had found love again. But when her 6-year-old daughter reveals a frightening secret about her new stepfather, everything falls apart…
After my husband Charles passed away in a terrible workplace accident, my world came crashing down. For three years, I stumbled through life, holding my head high for my 6-year-old daughter, Maggie. She was my everything. She still is my everything.
Since then, she’s the one who’s been the most urging me to get out of bed. But after a while, even her sweet smiles couldn’t fill the painful void.

Then Jacob arrived.
He had this warm smile that made you feel safe, like everything was going to be okay. He was patient, kind, and most importantly, he adored Maggie.
I saw my child light up around him in a way I hadn’t seen since my husband died. Slowly, I began to believe again. It’s possible that life after Charles could be happy, and it might even involve another person.

“Hillary,” I imagined her saying. “We’ve spent years being each other’s ‘great’ love, but it’s time to find a different kind of love now. Go be happy. Do it for Maggie. Do it for you.”
And that’s what I did. I let Jacob in, and soon, a relationship blossomed.
Two months ago, I married Jacob on a small farm with a duck pond. I thought I had found the missing piece of our family. Or at least, a piece that would help Maggie and me move forward in life.
But sometimes life doesn’t just throw you curve balls. Instead, it aims straight at your heart.

Let me tell you all about it.
One night, as I was tucking Maggie into bed, she hugged her favorite bunny tightly and looked at me with her big brown eyes.
“Mom?” she said hesitantly.
“Yes, my love?” I asked. “What’s going on?”
His voice became a whisper.

“The new dad asked me to keep a secret from you. Is that okay?”
The words hit me like a punch to the heart. My stomach twisted violently.
“Baby girl, you know you can call Jacob ‘daddy,’ right?” I asked, trying to calm myself down before my baby girl threw up the secret she was about to reveal.
“I prefer New-Daddy,” she said, pouting. “So… is it good? The secret?”
“No, sweetheart,” I said softly, trying to keep my voice steady. “You can still tell me anything. What’s wrong?”

She fidgeted, biting her lip.
“New Dad said I shouldn’t tell you… but yesterday, when you were at work, I woke up early from my nap and went to get him. He promised me we could play on the PlayStation. I couldn’t find him anywhere.”
A cold shiver ran through me.
“What do you mean?” I asked, gently brushing her hair back. “Dad wasn’t there when you woke up? Did he leave you alone?”
She shook her head.

“I called him, but he didn’t answer,” she continued, giving me a nervous look. “Then I saw him come out of the basement with a pretty lady in a red dress. He told me not to tell you.”
My heart raced.
“What were they doing down there?”
She shook her head.
“I don’t know, Mom. I just know he told me not to tell you. But you said secrets were bad, so…” Her voice trailed off, and she looked at me like she’d done something wrong.

“You did the right thing, sweetheart,” I said, trying to hide my growing unease. “What did she look like?”
“She had long blonde hair, like a princess. And a red dress. She smelled nice, too.”
The basement?
It was just a dusty, unfinished space filled with old boxes and tools. Jacob and I had barely set foot in it since he moved in.
Why would he take a woman there?

Later that evening, as Jacob was scrolling through his phone on the couch, I confronted him.
“Maggie told me there was a woman here yesterday,” I said, arms crossed. “She said you took her down to the basement. Care to explain?”
His face lit up with something.
Guilt?
Panic?
But he quickly recovered.

“Oh, that?” he asked, laughing. “She’s an interior designer. I wanted to surprise you by doing up the basement. It’s been a mess for years.”
“An interior designer?” I repeated, skepticism permeating my voice.
“Yeah! I wanted to make it a cozy family space for us. I thought it would be a nice gift, you know? I wanted a projector, a mini fridge, and maybe even a popcorn maker.”
He led me down to the basement and turned on the light. To my shock, the dingy space had been transformed—painted walls, new furniture, warm lighting.

It was… beautiful. Jacob smiled, visibly pleased with himself.
“What do you think?”
I forced a smile. But something didn’t add up. Why had he been so secretive about it? And there was something about Maggie’s description of this woman that was bugging me.
That night, while Jacob was sleeping, I opened his social media. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for, but my gut told me there was more to this story.

That’s when I saw her.
A photo from two years ago, before we met. It showed Jacob, smiling broadly, his arm around a woman with long blond hair, wearing a red dress.
My stomach turned.
Was this the same woman Maggie had seen?
The next morning I showed Maggie the picture.
“Is that her?” I asked, my voice tight.
His eyes widened.
“Yes, Mom. It’s her.”

I felt the room spin. Jacob had lied. He knew this woman. But I needed proof before I confronted him again.
When Jacob left for work, I retrieved the hidden cameras I had installed in the garage and on the porch after my husband died, and installed them in the basement and living room. I knew Jacob wouldn’t notice them; he was aloof when it came to details.
Later, I told Jacob that I had a last-minute business trip for a few days.
“It’s no problem, my love,” he said. “I’ll watch Maggie.”

“No, actually, I was thinking about taking her to my mom’s. She’s been asking for a sleepover for a while now and I think Maggie could use some time to get out of our routine. Do you agree?”
“Absolutely,” he replies. “We can all use a break. You can use a break, too, Hillary. You need a break between jobs, okay?”
Later that day, I took Maggie to my mother’s house and told her what was happening.

“Honey, I hope you get the answers you need,” she said, pushing a plate of cookies toward me. “You and Maggie have been through too much. The last thing you need is to worry about a man who is supposed to be your peace.”
I nodded.
She was right, of course. Jacob’s presence in our lives had been peaceful, and he had illuminated our lives with a light that had been dimmed by Charles’ death. But since Maggie’s confession, I had felt nothing but anxiety and a sense of dread that refused to leave me.

That night, I camped out in a nearby hotel room. I sat on the bed and ate ice cream while staring obsessively at the camera. But as the hours passed, nothing happened. Jacob lounged in front of the television, drinking milk straight from the carton, eating chocolate-covered pretzels, and just… being .
The next morning, as I sat by the window eating breakfast, my paranoia seemed all-consuming and ridiculous. The day passed without anything out of the ordinary. Jacob lounged around the house. I went to bed thinking I was just being unreasonable.

Until a notification sounds:
MOTION DETECTED.
My heart pounded as I opened the app, jumping to where the motion had been detected. There he was, Jacob, standing in the basement, kissing the woman in red. I watched as he whispered something in her ear, and they laughed.
He was cheating on me.
In my house.

Fueled by adrenaline, I ran to the house and pulled into the driveway just as Jacob was walking her to her car. When he saw me, his face twisted into a grimace.
“Oh, honey! Are you home now? In the middle of the night?” he stammers. “That’s the designer I told you about.”
“Really?” I gave a sarcastic start, crossing my arms. “She makes late night calls?”

“Yes… she’s busy.”
“That’s right, and I just watched you grope her in my basement, Jacob. Is that part of the job?”
Jacob froze, his mouth opening and closing. The woman rolled her eyes and turned to him.
“Finally, she knows,” she snapped. “Hillary, you finally figured out the program. Damn it! How could you not see it sooner? Now, you, Jacob, can come back to me.”
“What?” I jumped.

“We’ve been together for ten years, sweetheart. He told me he was only with you because you had a nice house and a steady income. Being a sad widow was a plus, really.”
His words hit me like a slap in the face. I stared at Jacob, waiting for him to deny the facts.
He didn’t. He didn’t say a word.
“Get out,” I demanded. “Both of you. Get out now.”
“You’re not going to say anything?” she asked him.
The woman drove off, slamming the car door. Jacob tried to apologize, but I pointed down the street.

“Out. Now,” I hissed. “Don’t ever come back.”
The next day I packed up all of Jacob’s stuff and threw it in trash bags. I was going to leave it in front of his mother’s house, but I decided to do something better.
I left them at a construction site. I figured the workers could help themselves. Then I drove to my mother’s house, ready to see my little girl.
“What happened?” my mother asked, peering at me.

“I’ll tell you tomorrow,” I said. “Today is about Maggie.”
I put Maggie in the car and took her out for ice cream. As she dug into her sundae, I leaned over to her.
“You did the right thing telling me the truth, sweetheart. I’m so proud of you.”
She smiled, her face lit up.
“No more secrets, Mom,” she said.
“That’s true,” I said, pulling him into my arms. “But when we go home, you need to know that Jacob won’t be there. He won’t be with us anymore.”

She was silent for a moment, then she spoke.
“Mom? I didn’t like the new dad that much anyway.”
Jacob was gone, and so was the life I thought we were building. But as I looked at Maggie, I realized I didn’t need him. I had her, my home, and the strength to go on.
