At the age of 17, a young girl discovered that she was pregnant. Something that her parents, very pious people, did not accept at all. Consequently, they threw her out. Fortunately, in her misfortune, she ended up finding help, and in the most unexpected way possible.
“Get out!” her foster mother screamed, as Kendall covered her face with her hands and sobbed. “You’re a filthy sinner! I don’t want you in this house. I don’t want you perverting your siblings!”
Devastated, Kendall gave her adoptive father a sad look, but he deliberately looked away. He would never, ever oppose his wife! Her mother pushed Kendall towards the door. “I should have known you’d be an easy woman, like your mother. Shame on you!” she screamed.
Kendall sat sobbing on the sidewalk in front of the house. Then her adoptive father came out with a bag. “Your sister packed some things for you,” he said, handing her a small roll of bills. “I’m sorry, Kendall… But you know your mother…”
Kendall wiped her eyes and looked up at him. “She’s not my mother!” she screamed. “And you’re not my father! You promised to love me no matter what, that’s what REAL parents do!” He then walked away, looking ashamed. Distraught, Kendall grabbed a few things and left.

One of Kendall’s biggest fantasies was that a guardian angel watched over her and sometimes magically dropped gifts into her life. On her birthday, she always received gifts from school, which she hid in her locker and never took home. At Christmas, she found candy canes hanging on the tree outside her window and a stocking filled with forbidden treats.
Kendall had searched for her guardian angel for a long time, but she had never managed to catch a glimpse of the mysterious presence. Now that she was alone in the world with a baby in her belly, it was the moment when she needed this angel the most.

She walked to the nearby park and sat down with her backpack on her lap. She counted the money her adoptive father had given her. A little over $56. It wasn’t even enough for a night in a seedy motel.
No matter how dark and hopeless the situation seems, remember that there is always a guardian angel watching over you.
Kendall started sobbing again when she heard a friendly voice. “Girl, why are you so sad? Maybe Mommy Mila can help you!”
Kendall looked up at a tall woman with a friendly smile. She was wearing a brightly colored flowered apron and he was carrying pruning shears in one hand and a bouquet of roses in the other.
“I’m… OK…” Kendall replied.

The woman shook her head and sat down next to Kendall. “No, honey, you’re not,” she said. “But you know you can tell me anything. I promise I won’t judge you.”
So Kendall told her sad story and said, “I have no money, no job, nowhere to go, and a baby to take care of.”
“I’ll give you a job,” Mila said calmly. “And I have a little place where you can stay, but you’ll have to take care of the baby yourself!”
“You’re going to give me a job?” Kendall asked in surprise. “Really?”

“Yes,” Mila said. “I have a flower stand at this part of the park, but I want to open another one near the business district. I’ll teach you how to arrange flowers and we’ll see how it goes.”
Kendall smiled through her tears. “I can do it! I love flowers!”
“Well,” Mila said. “Let’s go see the little apartment I can put you in.”
The apartment wasn’t far. It was tiny but very clean and comfortable and Kendall couldn’t believe her luck. Maybe her guardian angel was watching over her after all!
Over the next few months, things went from strength to strength. The flower stand in the financial district was a huge success, and Mila was very pleased with Kendall. The doctor Mila took her to said that she and the baby were healthy.

Five months later, Kendall gave birth to an adorable baby boy she named Michael. Mila gave Kendall three months off before she went back to work, and adjusting to a newborn was very difficult.
Michael was crying all the time, and Kendall was constantly changing his diapers. The baby never slept more than 10 minutes at a time, and Kendall was completely exhausted. Then one morning, she woke up to the sun streaming into her room.
“Michael!” she screamed, and ran to her baby’s little room. Michael was fast asleep, his little fists under his chin, looking like an angel. Kendall couldn’t believe her son had slept through the night without eating or wetting his diaper!
Then she noticed that the bottle she had prepared for his evening meal was empty and his diaper was clean and dry. “This is really weird!” she thought. “Did I feed and change him in my sleep?”

That night, Michael didn’t cry anymore, and when Kendall woke up in the morning, he was fed, dry, and sleeping peacefully. “This is getting really scary!” Kendall thought. “Maybe I’m sleepwalking or something. I’m not sleeping tonight!”
Kendall lay awake, waiting for any sound to come from Michael’s room, and at three in the morning, she heard a soft scream followed by muffled sounds. There was someone in Michael’s room!
Kendall glanced into the room. There was a woman leaning over Michael’s crib, talking softly to him and changing his diaper. Kendall flicked the light switch. “Who are you?” she yelled. “Get away from my baby!”
The woman gasped and Michael began to scream. Then the woman took Michael in her arms and began to calm him down. “Hello Kendall,” she said calmly. “I’m Martha Douglas and I’m your mother.”

Martha told Kendall her story. Like Kendall, Martha got pregnant at a young age, at sixteen. “My mother wanted me to have an abortion, but I refused,” Martha explained. “So she threw me out, and I had to give you up.
“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done and it broke my heart. I was determined to stay in your life, Kendall, so I saw you as often as I could and sent you birthday presents and Christmas treats.
“Later, I finished high school and started my own business. I have a string of flower shops in the city – over thirty – so it was easy to ask one of my employees, Mila, to offer you a job. This house was my late mother’s…”
“But why didn’t you say anything? Why were you hiding?” Kendall asked him.

Martha shrugged. “I was ashamed,” she whispered. “I know what you must think of me, especially since unlike me, you decided to keep your baby. I didn’t mean to wake you. Excuse me.”
“I’m lucky,” Kendall said, hugging Martha. “If you and Milla hadn’t helped me, I might have given up on Michael too! How could I think badly of you?”
Martha had found her daughter and grandson too, and they both settled into her beautiful home. Finally, Kendall had a loving and understanding mother who loved and supported her unconditionally.
