Henry’s daughter, Sophie, met Sandra, who looked exactly like her, at school and spent time with her. They were convinced they were twin sisters, and Henry was shocked when he met Sandra and her mother. So he decided to find out what had happened.
Henry moved from Texas to Los Angeles when his daughter, Sophie, turned seven and was about to enter third grade. “Okay, here we are. Your new school, Sophie. Are you happy?” he asked his daughter as he dropped her off.
“I think so…” Sophie replied, nervously twirling her fingers around her skirt. “What if no one likes me?”

“They’ll love you. You just have to be nice to everyone, and if someone’s mean to you, you go the other way. Don’t start fighting, okay?” Henry added before kissing her forehead.
Sophie said goodbye and entered the school. She immediately found her classroom, and everyone was already inside. But all the children’s eyes widened, and some even jumped when they saw her. She stopped at the door and looked around, confused.
Her new classmates began to turn their heads between her and another girl sitting in the back. She tried to catch a glimpse of a blonde head. Suddenly, a boy shouted, “That’s Sandra’s clone!”
That’s when Sophie saw the girl at the back of the class, and she jumped at the sight. This girl looked exactly like her! Sandra stood up and looked at the new girl, her mouth agape. “Wow! We look like twins!” she exclaimed, smiling broadly.
Sophie immediately felt at ease and smiled at the girl as well. “Yes. But why? I don’t have any sisters,” she replied.
“Me neither! It’s just my mom and me,” Sandra said and jumped over to Sophie, holding her hand. “Come sit with me.”
They spent a few minutes chatting, and other children approached them as well. That’s when the teacher, Miss Carr, entered. “I think we have a new student today, Sophie Douglas. Come and say hello,” said their teacher, who suddenly gasped a small “Oh.”
“Miss Carr, she’s just like Sandra!” said a child as Sophie walked to the front of the class.

“Hello, my name is Sophie. I love books and going to the beach with my dad. We moved from Texas, and I’m so excited to make new friends,” the girl said, smiling at everyone. Miss Carr clapped, and the rest of the class followed suit.
“That’s great, Sophie. And it looks like you have a twin in our class. That’s really great! You can go sit down now. Okay, today we’re going to learn about frogs…” Miss Carr immediately began her lesson.
Sophie and Sandra played all day with all of Sandra’s friends. They bonded faster than anyone could have imagined. At the end of school, Sophie told her father everything she knew about Sandra and told him that they looked alike.
After hearing about his new friend all week, Henry was curious to see her and decided to call Sandra’s mother to talk. They arranged a playdate and decided to meet at McDonald’s a few days after Sophie’s first day at her new school. When Sandra and her mother, Wendy, walked in, Henry’s jaw dropped. He couldn’t believe his daughter hadn’t exaggerated.
The woman also jumped when she saw Sophie. “Oh my God! Hello! You must be Sophie. Sandra has been telling me about you all this week. You really do look like twins!” Wendy exclaimed with a big smile. The girls went into the playground and the adults were finally able to talk.
“Hello, my name is Henry. It’s nice to meet you,” Henry said, shaking Wendy’s hand. They sat down at one of the booths and chatted some more.
She echoed the sentiment. “Wow, I can’t believe this. I’ve read about the quid pro quo, but it must be something else,” Wendy commented as they watched the girls play.

“What do you mean?”
“Well, Sandra doesn’t know it yet, but I adopted her. Is Sophie your biological daughter?”
“Yes. I mean, my ex-wife, Irene, found out she was pregnant after we separated and had her. We shared parental responsibilities, but she died a year ago, and now I have full custody of the child. I was worried about Sophie, you know,” Henry said. “She just lost her mother, and I had to move here for work. It’s too much change. But Sandra has been a blessing. Sophie has been smiling all week and talking about how much they have in common. I can’t thank your daughter enough.”
“Where did you move from?”
“From Texas. We lived in Dallas,” Henry replied.
“Hmmm…” Wendy hummed, resting her chin on her hand.
“What?” Henry asked, frowning at the woman.
“I’m reluctant to say this. But I believe Sandra was born in Texas too,” Wendy revealed, wetting her lips with her tongue in hesitation. “I’ll have to double-check her birth certificate. But is there any chance your late ex-wife had twins?”

“I don’t know… I wasn’t there with her because of business. But no. It’s not possible. I came back a week after she gave birth. She had already left the hospital, and I met Sophie at her house. So, there’s no way that’s happening,” Henry replied, his eyes blinking rapidly, trying to think.
“Were you two together at that time?”
“What do you mean?”
“If she felt like you wouldn’t be there, maybe she thought two kids was too many…” Wendy suggested as cautiously as she could.
“So you’re saying she could have given up one child and kept the other?” Henry asked, still not believing Irene would have given one of their children up for adoption. “We weren’t good together, and that’s why we broke up. But it’s just… ugh… I don’t know what else to say.”
“Is there any way to find out?” Wendy asked the question again.
“I guess I could call the hospital, and we could check things out…” Henry mumbled, still in shock and running his fingers through his hair. Just then, the girls came back and said they were hungry, so that conversation will have to continue another day.

A few days later, he took Sophie to Wendy’s and returned to Texas. He spoke to the hospital staff and learned as much as he could. Finally, a kind nurse took pity on him and discovered that Irene had given birth to two babies.
Unfortunately, Henry will never know why she made the difficult decision to abandon a baby, but he suspected it was his fault.
I left her alone to give birth, and I wasn’t there for most of her pregnancy. It’s my fault. She probably knew she was having twins and didn’t tell me.
But there was nothing he could do about the past. He could only move forward and try to make amends. Upon his return, he and Wendy obtained a DNA test for Sandra, which confirmed their suspicions. But Henry made it clear that Wendy was the little girl’s mother. He would never try to separate them.
The adults sat down with the girls and told them everything as best they could, which meant explaining to Sandra that she was adopted. But the twins clapped their hands in joy and hugged each other, chanting, “We’re sisters! We’re sisters!”

Henry and Wendy could only laugh at them, happy that they were so happy. They had to navigate this delicate situation because Henry wanted to be a father to Sandra, but Wendy wasn’t sure how she would fit into Sophie’s life.
Ultimately, they decided to co-parent as if they were each other’s legal parents, and everything went wonderfully. The girls transitioned to this new normal better than they did, and it was perfect.
One night, Sophie said something that shocked Henry. “Dad, why don’t you marry Wendy? That way she can be my mother too.”
“Oh honey, it’s complicated. Wendy and I are just good friends,” he replied.
“I’ll never forget my mother. But I like her. I think she might be good for you too,” Sophie insisted.
Henry smiled. “We’ll see.”
But it was as if his daughter had predicted the future. Eventually, he and Wendy started dating. They married when the girls were 12, and they were both bridesmaids.
What can we learn from this story?
- You can’t change the past. Henry learned the hard way that he can’t change the past; he can only fix his mistakes and look to the future.
- Some things happen for a reason. Henry and Sophie moved to Los Angeles, where they reunited with Sandra and Wendy. It seems like more than just a coincidence.
