What was supposed to be the happiest day of my life turned into one I’ll never forget. I went from bride-to-be to uninvited guest who crashed the event out of revenge. But karma struck.
Thanks to him, I felt like the luckiest woman in the world.
When I met Ethan two years ago, I was convinced I’d found my dream. He was charming and knew exactly what to say to make me feel special! Seven months ago, when he proposed, I felt like the happiest woman in the world, but I had no idea I’d never become his wife.

We planned our wedding together, down to the smallest detail! We chose an elegant reception hall with a garden, cascading white roses, and other flowers.
We also had cake tastings to find the perfect cake and even chose the song we would dance to as husband and wife! Every moment seemed perfect, like a fairy tale—until everything fell apart a month before the wedding.

It happened on an ordinary Wednesday. I’d left work early to surprise Ethan with his favorite takeout. It was something small, just a gesture to show how much I appreciated him.
I walked into his apartment, already imagining the delighted expression on his face when he saw me standing there with a bag full of hamburgers and fries.
But as soon as I stepped inside, I knew something was wrong.

A woman’s coat was draped over a chair. When I heard light laughter coming from the bedroom, my stomach knotted.
I approached the door, each step heavier than the last. My hands were shaking as I grabbed the doorknob and slowly pushed it open.
There, tangled in the sheets, was Ethan. Along with my older sister, Lauren!

Time stood still as my mind struggled to process what I was seeing. My sister, the flesh of my flesh, was in bed with the man I was supposed to marry in a month!
Lauren jumped and rushed to cover herself, but Ethan? He sat down, completely unconcerned.
“Wait,” I said. “What is this?”
My so-called companion sighed. “You weren’t supposed to find out like this.”

“What?!” I asked. “Are you a liar?! My own sister betrayed me?!”
Lauren’s face was pale, but she didn’t say a word. She just hugged the sheets to her chest, avoiding my gaze.
Ethan, he dared to look me in the eyes and say: “I love him.”
I wanted him to deny it, to say it was a mistake, but instead, he looked relieved, like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. I couldn’t believe this was the same lovely man I’d wanted to walk down the aisle with after he became my husband!

It was like he was two different people – the man I’d gotten to know and that guy in bed with my sister.
“You love him?!” My voice cracked. “Then why the hell did you propose to me?!”
“I thought I loved you. But things changed. Lauren and I… we’ve been dating for a while.”
For a while now…
It wasn’t just a one-time thing. They’d been hiding behind my back for who knows how long!

I turned to Lauren. “How could you do this to me?!”
She finally spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. “I didn’t mean for this to happen, sis.”
I let out a laugh. “You didn’t mean for this to happen?! You didn’t trip and fall into his bed, Lauren!”
Ethan stood up, putting his arm around her. “Look, I understand you’re hurt, but we didn’t want to keep lying to you.”
My hands clenched. “Oh, you didn’t want to keep lying?”
I stormed out, shaking with rage and heartbreak.

A few days later, my parents called to talk to me. I’d been crying my eyes out ever since I’d made that discovery. My friends and bridesmaids came to comfort me, but I hadn’t heard from my parents until then.
I foolishly thought they’d be on my side for once. Instead, I was ambushed.
“We understand that you’re upset,” my mother said condescendingly.
“But Ethan and Lauren are in love,” my dad added. “Don’t ruin true love.”

I looked at them in disbelief. “True love? Are you serious?!”
Mom sighed. “Sweetheart, you’ve always been independent. You’ll move on. But Lauren… she needs stability. And Ethan makes her happy.”
“So what? You’re replacing me with her?! You’re acting like none of this ever happened?!”
“We’re not taking sides,” my father said, even though his tone clearly indicated they already had.
Then, the final blow.
“They’re still getting married,” my mother said. “Well, Lauren will be the bride.”

I blinked. “You’re not serious.”
“It’s already paid for,” she said, as if that made it all acceptable. “It would be a shame to let all these projects go to waste.”
I stood up so quickly that the chair squeaked against the floor. “Unbelievable.”
“We would like you to be happy for them,” Dad said.
I started laughing bitterly. “You really expect me to celebrate this?!”

Lauren had taken my fiancé, and my parents had taken her side—just like they always had. They’d always treated her best, and now they wanted me to smile by supporting her relationship with my fiancé!
I walked out of that house and didn’t look back.

When the wedding took place, I obviously wasn’t invited. That doesn’t mean I wasn’t going to attend. I decided not to make a scene. I wasn’t going to scream or throw cakes. I just wanted to sneak in and wait for the officiant to ask for objections.
Then I would stand up and tell their guests and our mutual friends that the man Lauren was marrying had first been my fiancé! I intended to embarrass them and make their “special day” the worst ever!
But when I got to the banquet hall, things were… grim.

There was no music. No laughter. Just silence, filled with tension. The guests stood frozen in place, and at the front of the room, uniformed officers milled around.
“What’s going on?” I asked the nearest police officer.
Before he could answer, I caught sight of my sister—still in her wedding dress, tears streaming down her face. My parents were sitting at a table, looking completely shocked.
But Ethan was nowhere to be seen.

The policeman turned to me. “Are you a guest?”
I hesitated before nodding. “Sort of. I was supposed to be the bride today.”
He sighs. “We came here to arrest the groom, but he wasn’t here. He was arrested at the city bus station trying to leave the city.”
I blinked. “What?!”
The officer gestured toward a group of detectives talking to guests. “Turns out he’s been running a long con. He never planned on marrying anyone.”
I felt my heart race. “What did he do?”

“He’s done this before—to three other women in town. He ran off with all the wedding gifts, the deposit, the decorations, and any money he could lay his hands on. He’s currently on the run.”
“He even lied about having family from Europe. He has no family. Nothing,” the police officer informed me.
My parents were still frozen in disbelief. Lauren—the woman who had betrayed me—was now left at the altar, sobbing as her last-minute bridesmaids comforted her.

And for the first time in weeks, I smiled as I stood there, absorbing the chaos before me.
Justice had been served!
As the guests began to leave, one of the officers approached me. “Hello, I saw you coming. I heard Officer James say you dodged a bullet.”
I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. “Yes. I guess that’s the case.”
He gave me a small smile. “Would you like to have coffee sometime? You know, with someone who isn’t a criminal?”
I glanced at his badge – Officer Matt.

For the first time in a long time, I felt something other than anger and betrayal. Maybe a fresh start wasn’t such a bad idea.
It was a year ago.
And tomorrow? I’ll marry him!
Life has a funny way of working out.
