I Adopted the Boy I Found on My Neighbor’s Porch and Helped Reunite Him with His Biological Father 13 Years Later – Story of the Day

A woman heard a baby crying outside her neighbor’s door and adopted him. Years later, she told her the truth about her adoption and decided to find his biological parents. That’s when an unexpected truth emerged.

I was walking home from work when a baby’s crying echoed through the night, and I frowned. I looked over to my neighbor Ellie’s house and saw a stroller on her driveway. With my eyes wide open, I walked over and saw a baby with a tear-stained face and flailing arms in the stroller. I rang Ellie’s doorbell several times, worried, trying to get the baby to stop crying.

“Hey, Judy. What the…?” Ellie answered the door, and was equally shocked when she saw the baby.

“Ellie, what’s going on? Why is there a baby in your front door?” I asked, stunned.

“I have no idea.” She shook her head.

“Didn’t you hear him scream?”

“No, I was watching TV in my room. My doorbell was the only thing I heard,” Ellie continued. “Should we call 911? What should we do?”

“Jack?” I asked, turning to her and frowning.

“Well, I guess,” I shrugged. I’d never been in this situation, and it seemed straight out of a movie, so the only solution was to call the police.

The police took the baby to the shelter, but told us they would investigate the matter to try to find the parents.

A few days later, my husband, Justin, and I decided to go to the shelter. After discovering that the parents hadn’t been found yet, we discussed it in detail and thought it would be a good idea to adopt the baby. Luckily, they approved us for foster care, and we got the little boy. We named him Tom.

Our lives were complicated, and being new parents was no walk in the park, but we made it happen. Sadly, Justin died when Tom was eight, and he took it very hard. They had been best friends. But thanks to therapy and the bond we formed, Tom and I got through it together.

I was so proud of my boy and happy to have heard him under Ellie’s doorstep that night.

I renovated the house after Tom’s 13th birthday, which was great. But having a bunch of noisy young teenagers was difficult. They ate like crazy and had tons of energy. I also had to entertain the moms, so I was exhausted, but my boy was happy, and that’s all that mattered. Until I walked into my room and saw him fluffing up a pile of paperwork.

“What’s this, Mom?” Tom asked, looking at me with cartoonish eyes. “Am I adopted?”

It wasn’t how I wanted him to find out, but it was done. So I sat on the floor with him and told him everything that had happened from when he cried at Ellie’s until Justin and I went to the shelter and organized everything.

“I want you to know that it doesn’t change anything. You’re my son, and Justin was your father. We loved you like nothing else in the world. Do you believe me?” I asked, worried.

Tom cried a little, telling me he missed his dad. But he seemed fine after that… until a few days later, when he cautiously approached me.

“Mom, can I talk to you about something?” he asked, looking down.

“Sure. Sit down and tell me.” I gave him a reassuring look, and we sat down at the kitchen table.

“I want to find my biological parents,” he said quickly. He told me he loved me and that his father loved me too. But he wanted to know more about them, have some kind of relationship, if possible, and hopefully create a bond.

I obviously couldn’t say no, even though it worried me. “There’s a chance we won’t find them because we have almost no information on them. The police couldn’t find them 13 years ago, but I’ll do my best. However, they might also refuse to meet you. Do you think you can handle that?” I asked him calmly.

Tom thought for a few minutes and finally nodded. “I think so. If not, we can work on it with Dr. Bernstein,” he replied with a small smile.

“Okay. I’m proud of you, son. Let’s take the laptop and see how we can find them,” I told him, and we went to his room.

We started researching reunification, and I even called the shelter to see if they had any helpful information. Apparently, some organizations specialize in reuniting biological parents with children they’ve given up for adoption, but adults have to register.

Still, we tried everything we could. I created a Facebook post and shared it on Twitter, detailing what happened the night I found Tom and how interested he was in seeing his parents. I also asked our neighbors to share the post, since the incident had happened in our neighborhood, after all.

However, our searches remained fruitless for a long time.

One day, I was at Ellie’s house, complaining about the whole situation. “Tom is so sad about this. I don’t think we’ll ever find any leads.” I sighed, drinking tea with my friend.

“Why does he want to find his biological parents?” she asked, her eyes worried.

“I think it’s because Justin died. I think he wants a father figure again. I wanted to help him with that, but I don’t know what else to do. I don’t know what else to do.” I shake my head and look toward his kitchen window.

“Poor Jack,” she said unexpectedly, sipping her tea.

“Jack?” I asked, turning to look at her and frowning at the sudden widening of her eyes.

“Uh, well… Ehh, I…”

“Ellie, you know something, don’t you?” My voice grew louder as I said the words. I always suspected as much, even if Ellie didn’t seem to. But Justin and I thought it was odd that Ellie had heard the doorbell, not the baby crying on her doorstep. Of course, we couldn’t prove anything. But it was still odd.

“Ellie!” I yelled when she wouldn’t speak, startling her.

“Okay! Please, just let me explain. I… I didn’t know what to do. I was scared, and I didn’t want anyone to get into trouble,” she began, tears streaming from her eyes and her voice trembling.

“Please. What’s going on?”

“I know who baby Tom belongs to… and his name is Jack,” Ellie said. “Give me a minute.”

She got up and walked to her room. When she came back, she handed me a pendant and a letter.

“My friend, Alana, got pregnant, but she had just dumped her boyfriend, a lovely guy named Alex. She left him for someone else, and this other guy dumped her too when she couldn’t hide her pregnancy. Yet, she didn’t want Alex to know about the baby. Don’t ask me why, I don’t know. I told her several times that Alex would be a great father, but she didn’t want to,” Ellie explained.

“Continue.”

“She told me she was going to give the baby up for adoption, but then suddenly the baby appeared on my doorstep. He had this pendant with his date of birth and the name ‘Jack’ on it. In the letter, she asked me to take care of him and that she would come back when she had gotten her life back on track,” Ellie finished, opening the letter and giving it to me to read.

“Why didn’t you show this to the police?” I asked, shocked.

“I didn’t want to have a baby! I never did. I’m not cut out to be a mother. I felt so bad, so I just took the letter and the pendant and closed the door. You arrived a few minutes later.”

I wanted to yell at her for being so stupid, but then again, we were all in a mess that night. I was so angry with her that we didn’t speak for several minutes and sat in awkward silence until I broke it.

“Has your friend come back for him yet?” I wondered.

“No, and I have no idea if she’s alive,” Ellie said, her eyes sad and worried.

“And the father? You know him, right? Is he around? Do you know how to reach him?” I stared at her seriously.

“I know. Let me find my old phone. I have it saved there.” Ellie took a breath and went back to her room.

She gave me the coordinates, and it took a lot of strength, but I finally dialed the number.

Let’s just say the man on the other end of the line had no idea his ex-girlfriend was pregnant. After 30 minutes on the phone, he agreed to meet my son.

I talked to Tom about it, and he was cautiously optimistic. But I knew he was excited.

Alex showed up at our house the next day, and we had a long talk. He seemed like a good man, which made Ellie’s friend’s actions even crazier. But that was the past. We couldn’t just work on the future.

I left Alex and Tom to talk in the living room, but I stayed in the kitchen, listening. They began to bond over football, baseball, and video games. When it was finally time for Alex to leave, he asked me directly if he could visit Tom from time to time. I told him it was up to Tom.

They eventually formed an incredible bond, and I let him go to Alex’s. Eventually, he and I began co-parenting, and while Tom never forgot Justin, he loved having a father again. We tried to track down Alana, just in case she finally wanted to reconnect with her biological child, but she was like a ghost.

To my surprise, Alex and I got along well too, and after a few years, we realized how we felt about each other. We took it slow, but we got married when Tom turned 18 and was ready for college. My boy walked me down the aisle and loved that I wouldn’t be alone once he went off to college.

Despite the secrets and twists and turns, I wouldn’t change anything about my journey as a mother. I have a happy son and a wonderful family.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Adoptive parents must do what is best for their children. Judy helped Tom find his biological parents because it was the best thing to do for her child.
  • Lies always come out. Ellie tried to hide the fact that she knew where the baby on her driveway came from, but the truth came out.
