Donald Trump Defended Over Funeral Attire as Uncropped Photo Reveals the Full Picture
Donald Trump faced criticism over his choice of outfit at Pope Francis’ funeral on Saturday, April 26, with some accusing him of violating the official dress code. However, new images and online reactions suggest the backlash may have been unwarranted.
The former U.S. president was among several world leaders attending the funeral in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City. Other notable figures included Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Prince William, the future king of England.
Trump, 78, arrived in a blue suit, which drew criticism from some observers who claimed he was disrespecting protocol. The official dress code for the event reportedly called for a dark suit, black tie, and a black button on the left lapel for male attendees. Trump’s wife, Melania—who is Roman Catholic—adhered to traditional mourning attire with a black dress and veil.
The scrutiny began shortly after Trump posted a message on X (formerly Twitter) announcing his intention to attend the funeral. “Melania and I will be going to the funeral of Pope Francis, in Rome. We look forward to being there!” the post read, sparking confusion due to its phrasing.

Following the ceremony, a cropped photo circulated online showing only Trump in a blue suit, leading some to suggest he was the only world leader not in black. However, a fuller version of the image revealed that several other dignitaries—including Prince William and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan—also wore non-black suits.

Online users were quick to defend Trump. One wrote, “This is for all the idiots complaining about President Trump wearing a blue suit… Prince William, President Erdoğan, et al. They are literally grasping at straws.” Another added, “I see at least 30 people in non-black attire.”
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy also stood out for not wearing a suit, instead appearing in his usual black military attire—a look he has maintained since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

Though Pope Francis and Trump often clashed over political issues during Trump’s presidency—most notably on immigration and border policy—the former president’s appearance at the funeral was ultimately more in line with other attendees than critics initially claimed.
