A woman recounted a recent experience she had with her mother-in-law, asking for advice on whether her actions were justified. She explained that her husband had asked her mother to come babysit their three-month-old daughter so she could take a much-needed nap.
The woman was exhausted from caring for a colicky baby who frequently vomited in her sleep. It was difficult for her to rest while the child slept, as she had once choked on her own vomit. So, when her mother-in-law agreed to spend a few hours at her house and even prepare dinner, the woman was delighted to be able to rest.

During that visit, the woman’s husband, who works as a truck driver, was away on a week-long trip. In a heartfelt message posted on Reddit , the woman expressed her gratitude for her mother-in-law’s offer to cook dinner and her willingness to babysit.
Unfortunately, her relief quickly turned to dismay when she woke up at 4 p.m. to the sound of her daughter’s cries. Rushing into the child’s room, she found her still in her crib with a dirty diaper, indicating she had been crying for some time. The woman rushed to her room to retrieve her phone and realized it wasn’t plugged into the charger where she had left it.
She also realized that the baby monitor had been turned off, which explained why she hadn’t heard her baby crying at first. Worried, she looked for her mother-in-law but didn’t find her inside the house. The woman returned to the kitchen and that’s when she noticed her mother-in-law through the window, talking on the phone outside.

Shocked and angry by her mother-in-law’s neglect of her daughter, she demanded an explanation. She went outside and found her mother-in-law talking on the phone. Interrupting, she asked why she had her cell phone and how long she had left the baby crying in the other room.
The mother explained , “I heard your phone ring and it was my son, so I answered it and went outside so I wouldn’t wake you up, and I turned off the baby monitor so the baby wouldn’t wake you up if he started crying. She wasn’t crying when I went outside.”

When asked how long she had been on the phone, the mother-in-law replied, “37 minutes.” Upon learning that her mother-in-law had been on the phone for over 30 minutes, the woman quickly asked her to leave. Despite her mother-in-law’s protests and explanations, the woman insisted she leave, pointing out that her daughter had been crying for at least 10 minutes, if not longer.
The mother still protested, pointing out that crying wouldn’t harm the baby and that she hadn’t heard her crying, otherwise she would have gone to take care of her granddaughter immediately. The woman, tired of her mother-in-law’s excuses, replied , “Yes, but instead, you decided to take my phone and go talk to my husband for 40 minutes, without accomplishing the task you came here for. Leave.” Her mother-in-law eventually left.

Things took a different turn when the woman’s husband returned. She was devastated when her husband sided with her mother-in-law, arguing that her mother had done them a favor by coming to help care for the baby. He claimed that his wife had made her mother feel stupid for not picking up the baby as soon as he started crying. “Don’t be surprised if she never helps you again,” the husband said .
Despite her husband’s subsequent disapproval of her actions, the woman remained firm in her decision, feeling betrayed by her mother-in-law’s negligence. She sought advice from the Reddit community, wondering whether her actions were right or wrong. Redditors responded that both the mother-in-law and her husband were wrong.

“This is not what helping you looks like and it’s so dangerous. Total neglect of your child,” one user noted . Another Redditor chimed in , “During that time, your child could have vomited, choked on it, and it could have become dangerous.” Users online also said the husband should have supported the wife, “Babies have died from choking on vomit and the fact that your husband and his mother supported each other on this is disgusting. [That’s] the reason she was there, to have eyes on her.”
The woman agreed with several Redditors who supported her. She pointed out that the problem wasn’t just the baby crying for 10 minutes, but rather the fact that her mother-in-law spent 40 minutes outside on her cell phone instead of checking on the baby, even though she had been home for an hour and a half.

Throughout this period, the mother-in-law failed to check on the baby and turned off the baby monitor, behavior deemed inexcusable. The woman remained resolute, emphasizing that such disregard for her daughter’s safety deeply troubled her and prompted her to ask her mother-in-law to leave.
